From Film Sets to Front Doors: The Story Behind Blueprintjim

Hi, I’m Jim – the designer, maker, and creative mind behind Blueprintjim, my handmade homeware brand inspired by decades of experience in the film industry.

I’ve been designing and making for as long as I can remember—originally just for myself. It all started with pieces I made for my own home. I’d test them out, make sure they looked good, worked well, and stood the test of time. I wasn’t thinking about turning it into a business. But people started to notice.

Friends would visit and ask where I got my key rack or coat hooks, and when I told them I’d made them myself, the response was always the same: “You should sell these.” So I did. And that’s how BluePrintJim began.

What Makes Blueprintjim Different?

During the day, I work in the film industry as a prop maker and designer. If you’ve seen movies like Harry Potter, James Bond, Jurassic Park, or pretty much any big superhero film, chances are you’ve seen something I’ve worked on.

Working on set means you have to design and build all kinds of things—often fast, always to a high standard. It’s not enough for something to look good on camera. It also has to work. That mindset has carried over into my own designs. Whether it’s a coat hook, a key rack, or a bespoke wall piece, it needs to be functional, well-built, and visually appealing.

That attention to detail is the foundation of everything I make. If it’s not good enough for a film set, it’s not good enough for someone’s home.

Designed With Purpose—and Personality

What really pushed me to start selling my work was a key rack I made for my hallway. I called it the “Key Lock” key rack—and it was nothing like the boring options I’d seen online. I wanted something colourful, original, and fun, and it had to actually work.

When friends came over, it was one of the first things they commented on. I liked it, sure—I’m obviously biased—but their response surprised me. That little project sparked something bigger. I started thinking about all the other useful things I could make, not just for myself, but for anyone who appreciates design that’s a little bit different.

Tired of Cheap, Mass-Produced Homeware?

Me too. That’s a big part of what drove me to make my own things in the first place.

I was fed up with ordering items online only to receive something flimsy, poorly made, and designed to be thrown away. So I made a conscious decision: I’d use high-quality materials that look great and actually last.

You’ll see materials like birch-faced ply, stainless steel, and other solid components in my work. They’re not just chosen for durability, but for their aesthetic value too. These materials elevate everyday items—making them feel more special, more considered.

For me, quality of finish and functionality go hand in hand with design. I don’t believe in style over substance. You can—and should—have both.

From Wand-Making to Wall Hooks

My day job is incredibly varied. One day I might be building a wand for a wizard, the next I could be fabricating a gadget for a secret agent or a dino-themed prop. I bring the same creative energy and attention to detail to my homeware designs.

I’ve always admired brands that think outside the box—companies like Alessi, Suck UK, and J-Me have inspired me for years. I love their originality, and the way they add personality to even the most functional objects.

That’s what I aim to do with Blue Print Jim. Whether it’s a key rack, a coat hook, or something new I’m working on, I want every piece to feel thoughtful, creative, and made to last.
